How to Prepare Your Water Fountain for the Harsh Winter Conditions

10/21/2024 | Products , Update

Water fountains, whether they are small garden features or large architectural pieces, need winter care to prevent damage from freezing temperatures. Follow these tips to winterize your water fountain effectively:

1. Drain the Fountain

By using the Little Giant 5-MSP, start by completely draining the water from your fountain. Remove any remaining water in the basin, pump, and pipes. This step is crucial to prevent the water from freezing and causing cracks or other damage.

2. Clean the Fountain

Clean the fountain thoroughly before winter sets in. Remove any debris, algae, and dirt. Use a gentle cleaner and a soft brush to avoid damaging the surface. A clean fountain is less likely to develop issues when you start it up again in the spring.

3. Protect the Pump

If your fountain’s pump is removable, take it out and store it in a dry, frost-free location. Clean it and make sure it is thoroughly dry before storing it. If the pump is not removable, make sure to protect it from freezing temperatures by covering it with a weather-resistant material or insulating it with foam. The Little Giant PES Series is submersible and corrosion-resistant; making it ideal for protecting water and pond fountains.

4. Cover the Fountain

Use a fountain cover or tarp to protect the entire structure from the elements. Ensure the cover fits well and is secured to prevent it from blowing away. This cover will help keep out debris and protect the fountain from snow and ice.

5. Insulate the Basin

For larger fountains, consider adding insulation to the basin to protect against freezing. You can use insulating blankets or foam around the basin’s edges. Ensure the insulation is not in direct contact with any electrical components or the pump.

6. Monitor the Fountain

Check on your fountain periodically during the winter months. Ensure that the cover remains in place and that no water has accumulated in the fountain. Address any issues promptly to prevent damage.

7. Prepare for Spring

As spring approaches, begin preparing your fountain for reactivation. Remove the cover, clean any debris, and ensure all components are in good working order before refilling and restarting the fountain.

Winterizing your water fountain is essential to protect it from the harsh effects of freezing temperatures. By following these steps, you can ensure your fountain remains in good condition year-round. Proper winter care not only extends the life of your fountain but also makes its reactivation in spring much smoother, allowing you to enjoy its beauty for years to come.
